1685 — Explorer La Salle builds french colony at Lavaca Bay

1690 — Provincia de Tejas is Founded, Spain builds outpost in East Texas to block french trespass

1718-31 — Spain concentrates its power in Texas at San Antonio

1749-54 — Presidio and missions built at Goliad to protect Texas Coast

1803 — U.S. purchases Louisiana from France

1821 — Mexico gains independence from Spain

1822 — Stephen F. Austin begins colonization of lower Colorado-Brazos rivers.

1824 — Texas and Coahuilla joined as a single Mexican state. Many anglos move to Texas.

1833 — Texas petitions for separation from Coahuilla

1834 — General Santa Anna becomes dictator of Mexico and changes peaceful laws.

1835 — (June) Texas rebels defeat Mexican forces at Fort Anahuac

1835 — (Oct.) First shots of Texas revolution fired in Gonzales
