PELOSO, BERNALDO (?–?). Bernaldo Peloso, a member of Hernando de Soto's expedition, took part in the 1558 exploration of the Texas coast led by Guido de Lavazares. A preliminary to Tristan de Luna's abortive colony at Pensacola Bay, 1559–61, the voyage discovered in mid-September a Texas bay believed to be Matagorda and named it San Francisco. Peloso, who conducted the reconnaissance from Veracruz to Choctawhatchee Bay in Florida and back in record time, later served as a pilot in the fleet that took Luna to Florida.
