Tejanos |

BUSTILLO Y CEBALLOS, JUAN ANTONIO (?–?). Juan Antonio Bustillo y Ceballos (Zevallos), soldier and governor of Spanish Texas, was in Texas for twelve years, seven of them (1724–31) as captain of Nuestra Señora de Loreto Presidio at La Bahía del Espíritu Santo. He assisted in the transfer of the Queretaran missions from East Texas to San Antonio in 1730 and was so successful that he was appointed governor of Texas in 1731. His administration was notable for the settlement of the Canary Islanders in San Antonio and for a campaign to the San Xavier (San Gabriel) and San Saba rivers against the Apaches in 1732.
